Leading Export Factoring Services in India to Boost International Sales
Tumblr media
Export factoring is a financial transaction and a type of debtor finance in which a business sells its accounts receivable (invoices) to a third party (the factor) at a discount. This arrangement provides the business with immediate funds, typically a percentage of the value of the receivables, which can help improve cash flow and mitigate the risks associated with international trade. Export factoring is particularly beneficial for businesses engaged in exporting goods or services to international markets.

[1] `there are often translations available in other languages long before English ones` This is really interesting! I'm familiar with translation in games, where english is often a very early target (a small game might get 0-5 translations, depending on amount of text) because the size of the market is larger.
[2] Do you happen to know why this is different for books? Is it faster to come to a deal about publication rights for some other languages to get started on the translation? Is translation to english harder (at least from French) than to say, Spanish?
The literary translation situation has long been very dismal in the English-speaking world! I don’t know a lot about video games, but are localisations provided by the company that makes the game? Because if that's the case it makes sense that games would get translated into English as a priority. For literary translations which are imported rather than exported, other countries have to decide to translate a foreign author and anglo countries (US, UK and Canada at least) are not very interested in foreign literature. There's something known as the "3% rule" in translation—i.e. about 3% of all published books in the US in any given year are translations. Some recent sources say this figure is outdated and it’s now something like 5% (... god) but note that it encompasses all translations, and most of it is technical translation (instruction manuals, etc). The percentage of novels in translation published in the UK is 5-6% from what I’ve read and it’s lower in the US. In France it's 33%, and that’s not unusually high compared to other European countries.
I don't think it's only because of the global influence of English* and the higher proportion of English speakers in other countries than [insert language] speakers in the US, or poor language education in schools etc, because just consider how many people in the US speak Spanish—I just looked it up and native Spanish speakers in the US represent nearly 2/3rds of the population of France, and yet in 2014 (most recent solid stat I could find) the US published only 67 books translated from Spanish. France with a much smaller % of native Spanish speakers (and literary market) published ~370 translations from Spanish that same year. All languages combined, the total number of new translations published in France in 2014 was 11,859; in Spain it was 19,865; the same year the US published 618 new translations. France translated more books from German alone (754) than the US did from all languages combined, and German is only our 3rd most translated language (and a distant third at that!). The number of new translations I found in the US in 2018 was 632 so the 3% figure is probably still accurate enough.
* When I say it’s not just about the global influence of English—obviously that plays a huge role but I mean there’s also a factor of cultural isolationism at play. If you take English out of the equation there’s still a lot more cultural exchange (in terms of literature) between other countries. Take Olga Tokarczuk’s Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead; it was published in 2009, and (to give a few examples) translated in Swedish 1 year later, in Russian & German 2 years later, in French, Danish & Italian 3 years later, in English 10 years later—only after she won the Nobel. I’m reminded of the former secretary for the Nobel Prize who said Americans “don't really participate in the big dialogue of literature” because they don’t translate enough. I think it's a similar phenomenon as the one described in the "How US culture ate the world" article; the US is more interested in exporting its culture than in importing cultural products from the rest of the world. And sure, anglo culture is spread over most continents so there’s still a diversity of voices that write in English (from India, South Africa, etc etc) but that creates pressure for authors to adopt English as their literary language. The dearth of English translation doesn’t just mean that monolingual anglophones are cut off from a lot of great literature, but also that authors who write in minority languages are cut off from the global visibility an English translation could give them, as it could serve as a bridge to be translated in a lot more languages, and as a way to become eligible for major literary prizes including the Nobel.
Considering that women are less translated than men and represent a minority (about 1/3) of that already abysmally low 3% figure, I find the recent successes of English translations of women writers encouraging—Olga Tokarczuk, Banana Yoshimoto, Han Kang, Valeria Luiselli, Samanta Schweblin, Sayaka Murata, Leila Slimani, of course Elena Ferrante... Hopefully this is a trend that continues & increases! I remember this New Yorker article from years ago, “Do You Have to Win the Nobel Prize to Be Translated?”, in which a US small press owner said “there’s just no demand in this country” (for translated works); but the article acknowledged that it’s also a chicken-and-egg problem. Traditional publishers who have the budget to market them properly don’t release many translations as (among other things) they think US readers are reluctant to read translated foreign literature, and the indie presses who release the lion’s share of translated works (I read it was about 80%) don’t have the budget to promote them so people don’t buy them so the assumption that readers aren’t interested lives on. So maybe social media can slowly change the situation by showing that anglo readers are interested in translated books if they just get to find out about them...

Finding the Right Indian Basmati Rice Supplier for Your Business in 2024
Tumblr media
In 2024, the global rice market will continue to boom, with Indian basmati rice emerging as one of the most sought-after varieties. Known for its unmatched aroma, long grain, and excellent cooking quality, basmati rice is a staple in cuisines around the world. For businesses looking to enter this lucrative market or strengthen their supply chain, finding the right supplier is a must. This guide helps you navigate the process, ensuring a reliable partnership that aligns with your goals and enhances your product offerings.
Why Indian Basmati Rice Is Different
Indian basmati rice is synonymous with quality and tradition. Grown in the fertile regions of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, this rice has earned Geographical Indication (GI) status, highlighting its authenticity and origin.
What makes Basmati rice unique is its aging process, where the grains are matured for several months to enhance their flavor and texture. This has led to an increase in global demand despite fluctuations in rice prices. According to the All India Rice Exporters Association, Indian Basmati will account for more than 70% of the global premium rice trade in 2023, thanks to its unmatched reputation.
Key factors to consider when choosing a supplier
When selecting a Basmati rice supplier, several aspects should be considered to ensure a smooth and profitable collaboration:
Certification and quality standards: Look for suppliers with certifications such as ISO, HACCP and BRCGS, which ensure adherence to global food safety and quality standards.
Market reputation: A supplier’s track record in exporting high-quality rice to global markets reflects their reliability and expertise.
Pricing and transparency: Understand the supplier’s pricing model and ensure clarity on factors that impact rice prices, such as logistics, currency exchange, and market demand.
Capacity and timely delivery: Evaluate if the supplier can meet your volume requirements without compromising on delivery timelines.
Top qualities of a reliable Basmati rice exporter
A reliable Basmati rice supplier has these key qualities:
Authenticity assurance: They source rice from GI-tagged regions, which guarantees a genuine Indian Basmati experience.
Sustainability practices: Many buyers today prefer eco-friendly suppliers who follow sustainable farming and packaging methods.
Client-centric approach: Reliable suppliers prioritize building long-term partnerships by offering customization, competitive pricing, and responsive communication.
Global export experience: Suppliers with a strong network and familiarity with international trade regulations make the export process seamless.
Questions to ask potential suppliers
To make an informed decision, ask potential suppliers the following questions:
Where is your rice sourced and processed?
Make sure the supplier has direct links to GI-certified regions and state-of-the-art processing facilities.
Are there quality checks in place?
Discuss their grading system, inspections, and certifications to confirm product consistency.
How do you manage fluctuations in rice prices?
An active supplier can provide information on market trends and hedging strategies to minimize cost variations.
Can you handle custom packaging or branding?
For businesses looking to add unique value to their product lines, suppliers that offer customization are invaluable.
What is your logistics strategy?
Check if the supplier has efficient shipping methods and partnerships with reliable freight companies to avoid delays.
Choosing the Best Option for Your Business
Finding the right Indian rice supplier is a crucial decision that can significantly impact the success of your business in 2024 and beyond. By focusing on authenticity, quality assurance, and supplier transparency, you can build a partnership that aligns with your goals. With global demand for Indian basmati steadily increasing, now is the right time to invest in securing a reliable supplier.
The key to succeeding in the competitive rice market lies in doing your homework, asking the right questions, and prioritizing long-term value over short-term profit.

How to Choose the Right Propofol Injection Supplier in India
When it comes to choosing the right pharmaceutical products for healthcare needs, ensuring quality and reliability is critical.  One such important product is propofol, a widely used anesthetic in surgeries and intensive care units.  As hospitals, healthcare facilities, and medical professionals look for dependable suppliers, finding the right propofol injection manufacturers in India becomes essential to guarantee patient safety and the success of medical procedures.
Tumblr media
India has emerged as a key player in the global pharmaceutical industry, with many companies producing and exporting high-quality medications, including propofol injections.  However, given the variety of options available, selecting the right propofol injection supplier in India can be a challenging task.  This blog provides a comprehensive guide on how to choose the best supplier, ensuring that you partner with a company that meets your needs in terms of quality, pricing, regulatory compliance, and service.
1.         Evaluate the Manufacturer’s Reputation and Experience
The first factor to consider when selecting a propofol injection supplier in India is the manufacturer’s reputation and experience.  Look for companies with a long-standing history in the pharmaceutical industry, as this demonstrates stability, expertise, and trustworthiness.
The best pharma companies in India are known for their commitment to producing high-quality products and adhering to international standards.  A manufacturer with a strong track record will have an established reputation for delivering safe and effective medications.  Customer reviews, certifications, and feedback from healthcare professionals can provide insights into the company’s reliability.
A key point is to check if the manufacturer is a recognized propofol injection distributor in India.  Distribution experience ensures that the company has established supply chains and logistics systems, which are critical for timely and consistent delivery of pharmaceutical products.
2.         Ensure Compliance with Regulatory Standards
Compliance with national and international regulatory standards is a non-negotiable aspect when choosing a propofol injection manufacturer in India.  Indian pharmaceutical companies are required to adhere to stringent guidelines set by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), ensuring that their products meet safety and efficacy standards.
In addition to domestic regulations, if you are seeking a supplier for international needs, it is important to verify that the propofol injection exporter in India complies with the regulatory requirements of your country.  For instance, propofol injections intended for export to the United States must meet FDA (Food and Drug Administration) guidelines, while those going to Europe must comply with EMA (European Medicines Agency) standards.
Check if the manufacturer has the necessary certifications, such as:
GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice):  Ensures that products are consistently produced and controlled according to quality standards.
WHO-GMP:  Recognized by the World Health Organization, ensuring that the pharmaceutical company meets global standards.
ISO Certifications:  Indicate the company’s commitment to quality management systems.
By selecting a supplier with these certifications, you can be confident that the propofol injections you receive are of the highest quality and safety.
3.         Assess the Quality of Propofol Injections
Quality is one of the most critical aspects when it comes to selecting propofol injection suppliers in India.  Propofol is an intravenous anesthetic agent that must be manufactured under strictly controlled conditions to ensure its purity and safety.  Poorly manufactured propofol can lead to adverse reactions, infections, or even fatal outcomes.
When evaluating the quality of propofol injections, consider the following:
Sterility:  Ensure that the manufacturer adheres to sterile production techniques to prevent contamination.
Purity:  The product should meet all pharmacopoeial standards for purity to avoid side effects or complications during anesthesia.
Stability:  The product must remain stable and effective throughout its shelf life.
Packaging:  The packaging should protect the injection from contamination and degradation.  Ampoules or vials should be well-sealed and easy to handle for healthcare professionals.
Some propofol injection distributors in India may offer samples, which allow healthcare providers to evaluate the product’s quality before making large orders.  Taking advantage of this option can help ensure you are selecting a reliable supplier.
4.         Consider the Supplier’s Distribution Network
The availability of pharmaceutical products is crucial, especially when they are used in critical care settings.  A good propofol injection distributor in India will have an extensive distribution network to ensure timely delivery, no matter where your healthcare facility is located.
When assessing a supplier’s distribution capabilities, consider:
Geographical Reach:  Does the supplier have a presence across India or in the specific regions where you need the product? Can they also handle international shipments if necessary?
Logistics Efficiency:  How quickly can they deliver propofol injections to your facility? Are they equipped to handle emergencies and provide fast delivery when needed?
Cold Chain Management:  Propofol injections must be stored at specific temperatures to maintain their efficacy.  Ensure that the supplier has proper cold chain management in place to prevent the product from degrading during transportation.
Choosing a supplier with a reliable distribution network ensures that you will have consistent access to propofol injections, reducing the risk of supply shortages or delays in patient care.
5.         Compare Pricing and Cost-Effectiveness
Pricing is a significant consideration when selecting propofol injection manufacturers in India.  While the cost should never compromise quality, finding a supplier that offers competitive pricing can make a big difference, especially for healthcare facilities managing tight budgets.
It is essential to compare the pricing of different propofol injection suppliers in India to determine which one offers the best value for money.  However, keep in mind that the cheapest option is not always the best.  The focus should be on the cost-effectiveness of the product—are you getting a high-quality, reliable product at a reasonable price?
Some suppliers may offer discounts or bulk purchasing options, which can further help reduce costs.  Be sure to inquire about these options when negotiating with suppliers.
6.         Evaluate Customer Service and Support
A strong relationship with your propofol injection supplier in India is essential for ensuring smooth operations and access to critical products when you need them.  Customer service plays a vital role in this relationship, so it is important to select a supplier that prioritizes customer satisfaction.
Consider the following when evaluating customer service:
Responsiveness:  How quickly does the supplier respond to inquiries or issues? Are they available to address urgent concerns?
Support:  Does the supplier offer technical support or assistance with product-related questions? Can they provide guidance on proper storage and usage?
Problem Resolution:  How does the supplier handle issues like product defects or delivery delays? Do they offer a clear process for resolving problems?
The best pharma company in India will prioritize customer service and work to build long-term partnerships with healthcare providers.  They should be willing to collaborate with you to ensure your needs are met and that you have access to reliable, high-quality propofol injections.
7.         Consider Export Capabilities for International Needs
If you are sourcing propofol injections for international purposes, it is important to select a propofol injection exporter in India with experience in global markets.  Exporting pharmaceuticals comes with additional complexities, including regulatory compliance, customs clearance, and international shipping logistics.
The best exporters will have a clear understanding of these processes and be able to navigate them smoothly.  They should be able to provide documentation, such as certificates of analysis, that meet the regulatory requirements of the destination country.  Additionally, they should have a track record of successfully shipping propofol injections to other countries without issues related to product quality or delays.
Conclusion
Choosing the right propofol injection supplier in India is a decision that requires careful consideration of various factors, including the manufacturer’s reputation, regulatory compliance, product quality, distribution network, pricing, and customer service.  By taking the time to evaluate potential suppliers against these criteria, healthcare providers can ensure that they are partnering with a company that will meet their needs and provide reliable, high-quality propofol injections.
India is home to some of the best pharma companies in India, known for producing and exporting safe, effective medications, including propofol injections.  Whether you are sourcing for domestic or international needs, selecting the right supplier will ensure that your healthcare facility has access to the critical medications needed to deliver excellent patient care.

If you ever had pastries at breakfast, drank soy milk, used soaps at home, or built yourself a nice flat-pack piece of furniture, you may have contributed to deforestation and climate change.
Every item has a price—but the cost isn’t felt only in our pockets. Hidden in that price is a complex chain of production, encompassing economic, social, and environmental relations that sustain livelihoods and, unfortunately, contribute to habitat destruction, deforestation, and the warming of our planet.
Approximately 4 billion hectares of forest around the world act as a carbon sink which, over the past two decades, has annually absorbed a net 7.6 billion metric tons of CO2. That’s the equivalent of 1.5 times the annual emissions of the US.
Conversely, a cleared forest becomes a carbon source. Many factors lead to forest clearing, but the root cause is economic. Farmers cut down the forest to expand their farms, support cattle grazing, harvest timber, mine minerals, and build infrastructure such as roads. Until that economic pressure goes away, the clearing may continue.
In 2024, however, we are going to see a big boost to global efforts to fight deforestation. New EU legislation will make it illegal to sell or export a range of commodities if they have been produced on deforested land. Sellers will need to identify exactly where their product originates, down to the geolocation of the plot. Penalties are harsh, including bans and fines of up to 4 percent of the offender's annual EU-wide turnover. As such, industry pushback has been strong, claiming that the costs are too high or the requirements are too onerous. Like many global frameworks, this initiative is being led by the EU, with other countries sure to follow, as the so-called Brussels Effect pressures ever more jurisdictions to adopt its methods.
The impact of these measures will only be as strong as the enforcement and, in 2024, we will see new ways of doing that digitally. At Farmerline (which I cofounded), for instance, we have been working on supply chain traceability for over a decade. We incentivize rule-following by making it beneficial.
When we digitize farmers and allow them and other stakeholders to track their products from soil to shelf, they also gain access to a suite of other products: the latest, most sustainable farming practices in their own language, access to flexible financing to fund climate-smart products such as drought-resistant seeds, solar irrigation systems and organic fertilizers, and the ability to earn more through international commodity markets.
Digitization helps build resilience and lasting wealth for the smallholders and helps save the environment. Another example is the World Economic Forum’s OneMap—an open-source privacy-preserving digital tool which helps governments use geospatial and farmer data to improve planning and decision making in agriculture and land. In India, the Data Empowerment Protection Architecture also provides a secure consent-based data-sharing framework to accelerate global financial inclusion.
In 2024 we will also see more food companies and food certification bodies leverage digital payment tools, like mobile money, to ensure farmers’ pay is not only direct and transparent, but also better if they comply with deforestation regulations.
The fight against deforestation will also be made easier by developments in hardware technology. New, lightweight drones from startups such as AirSeed can plant seeds, while further up, mini-satellites, such as those from Planet Labs, are taking millions of images per week, allowing governments and NGOs to track areas being deforested in near-real time. In Rwanda, researchers are using AI and the aerial footage captured by Planet Labs to calculate, monitor, and estimate the carbon stock of the entire country.
With these advances in software and hard-tech, in 2024, the global fight against deforestation will finally start to grow new shoots.

Common Problems Solved by Emulsion Breakers in Crude Oil Processing
Crude oil processing is a complex and challenging task, fraught with numerous obstacles that can hinder efficiency and productivity.  One of the most persistent issues faced by the oil industry is the formation of emulsions.  Emulsions, which are mixtures of water and crude oil, can cause significant operational problems.  This is where emulsion breakers come into play.  These specialized chemicals are designed to separate emulsions into their constituent parts, allowing for smoother and more efficient processing.
Tumblr media
Imperial Oilfield Chemicals Pvt. Ltd., a leading emulsion breaker manufacturer in Vadodara, has been at the forefront of providing solutions to these common problems.  As a prominent emulsion breaker manufacturer in India and an oil chemical exporter in Vadodara, the company has extensive expertise in addressing the challenges posed by emulsions in crude oil processing.
Understanding Emulsions in Crude Oil
Emulsions in crude oil are formed when water droplets are finely dispersed within the oil.  These emulsions can be stable or unstable, with stable emulsions being particularly problematic due to their persistence and resistance to separation.  Factors such as the presence of natural surfactants, mechanical agitation during extraction, and the composition of the crude oil itself contribute to the formation and stability of these emulsions.
Common Problems Caused by Emulsions
1.   Reduced Oil Quality
Emulsions can significantly degrade the quality of crude oil.  The presence of water in the oil reduces its purity, which in turn affects the value and marketability of the final product.  High water content in crude oil can also lead to increased corrosion in pipelines and storage tanks, further compromising the quality and integrity of the oil.
2.   Increased Processing Costs
The presence of emulsions complicates the refining process, leading to higher operational costs.  Additional treatments and processing steps are required to separate the water from the oil, consuming more energy and resources.  This not only increases the cost of production but also reduces overall efficiency.
3.   Equipment Corrosion and Damage
Water and other contaminants in emulsions can cause significant corrosion and damage to processing equipment.  This leads to increased maintenance costs and downtime, negatively impacting productivity.  Over time, the wear and tear on equipment can result in the need for costly replacements and repairs.
4.   Environmental and Regulatory Concerns
Improper handling of emulsions can lead to environmental contamination and regulatory non-compliance.  Discharging emulsified water into the environment can cause pollution and harm to aquatic ecosystems.  Regulatory bodies impose strict guidelines on the disposal of emulsified water, and failure to comply can result in hefty fines and legal repercussions.
How Emulsion Breakers Address These Problems
Emulsion breakers, also known as demulsifiers, are chemical agents specifically designed to separate emulsions into oil and water.  As a leading emulsion breaker exporter in India, Imperial Oilfield Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. provides high-quality solutions that effectively address the common problems caused by emulsions in crude oil processing.
1.   Improving Oil Quality
Emulsion breakers work by breaking the bonds between water and oil molecules, allowing for the separation of water from the crude oil.  This results in higher purity oil with reduced water content, improving its quality and marketability.  The use of emulsion breakers ensures that the final product meets industry standards and fetches a higher market price.
2.   Reducing Processing Costs
By facilitating the efficient separation of water from oil, emulsion breakers streamline the refining process.  This reduces the need for additional treatment steps, conserving energy and resources.  Consequently, the overall cost of production decreases, enhancing the profitability of crude oil processing operations.
3.   Preventing Equipment Corrosion and Damage
The removal of water and contaminants from crude oil minimizes the risk of corrosion and damage to processing equipment.  This extends the lifespan of the equipment, reduces maintenance costs, and minimizes downtime.  Emulsion breakers thus play a crucial role in maintaining the operational integrity of oil processing facilities.
4.   Ensuring Environmental Compliance
Effective emulsion breaking and water separation allow for the proper handling and disposal of water, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.  By preventing the discharge of emulsified water into the environment, companies can avoid fines and legal issues, while also contributing to environmental sustainability.
Why Choose Imperial Oilfield Chemicals Pvt. Ltd.?
As a top-tier emulsion breaker manufacturer in Vadodara and a leading oil chemical exporter in Vadodara, Imperial Oilfield Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. stands out for several reasons:

A week after the Moscow Exchange was hit by U.S. sanctions, the ruble is experiencing unusual swings. In just two days, from June 18 to June 20, the dollar’s official exchange rate against the ruble dropped from 89 to 82.6 rubles, while the euro fell from 95.4 to 89 rubles. However, the very next day, Russia’s Central Bank raised the dollar exchange rate by nearly three rubles to 85.4, and the euro to 91.4 rubles. Meduza breaks down the factors behind this volatility and explains how to track the ruble’s fluctuations going forward.
On June 12, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Russia’s largest stock exchange, the Moscow Exchange (MOEX), and its subsidiaries, the National Clearing Center and the National Settlement Depository — effectively cutting off the Moscow Exchange from the dollar. That same day, the exchange announced that it would halt trading in the U.S. dollar and the euro, starting June 13. (Trading in the Hong Kong dollar also stopped.)
As a result, currency trading shifted to the over-the-counter (OTC) market. Even before the sanctions, 60 percent of currency transactions in Russia occurred off-exchange. Importers and exporters, the primary players on the Moscow Exchange, had the most influence on the ruble’s exchange rate in recent years. Now, they’ve also had to transition to the OTC market, leading to higher costs for buying and selling currency, as well as increased volatility in the ruble’s exchange rate.
These sanctions against the Moscow Exchange are another step towards making the ruble non-convertible and a new blow to importers and exporters, noted Alexander Kolyandr, a non-resident senior fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), in a column for The Bell.
A faux phoenix
The sharp fluctuations in the ruble’s exchange rate this week are the direct result of U.S. sanctions, which have caused demand for foreign currency to drop. This, in turn, has driven up the ruble.
U.S. sanctions have already been impeding Russian imports, with fewer and fewer banks in China, India, and Turkey offering their services to Russian companies out of fear of secondary sanctions. According to SberCIB analysts, imports in May were about 30 percent lower than they could have been with a normally functioning payment infrastructure. The Central Bank also noted that the expected seasonal spring increase in imports didn’t occur.
Now, this payment issue has been compounded by the sanctions against the Moscow Exchange. The halt in trading of the dollar and euro could affect at least 22 percent of imports, estimated Pavel Biryukov, an economist at Gazprombank. Promsvyazbank analysts believe that the new restrictions could reduce foreign goods deliveries by 15-20 percent.
Meanwhile, exporters continue to sell foreign currency earnings in compliance with a mandatory decree. Each day, the Central Bank sells yuan worth 8.1 billion rubles (over $90 billion) as part of budgetary operations, and exports and the current account surplus remain strong thanks to high prices for oil and other raw materials, Mikhail Vasilyev, the chief analyst at Sovcombank, told Vedomosti.
The Central Bank confirmed this. According to its preliminary data, the surplus in the foreign trade balance of goods from January to May increased to $56 billion, up from $47.6 billion in the same period last year, “due to a more significant drop in imports compared to exports.”
This situation is reminiscent of 2022, when the ruble sharply appreciated due to the withdrawal of foreign companies and the collapse of imports. “In fact, we’re now seeing a classic situation with a pool and two pipes: currency flows into the country in a stable stream through one pipe, and almost none flows out through the other,” explained Alexander Potavin, an analyst at the Finam financial group. According to him, this has led to an “unwanted strengthening of the ruble for the government.”
At the same time, sanctions against the Moscow Exchange are also impacting exporters. The sharp appreciation of the ruble may be due to their reluctance to sell currency at an unfavorable rate. On June 20, Reuters, citing market participants, reported a sharp decline in the sale of export earnings in yuan. The outlet’s sources believe this is because corporate sellers are unwilling to sell at a low rate. It’s also likely that the Russian authorities intervened: the Kremlin might have persuaded exporters to hold on to the currency to prevent the ruble from strengthening too much.
The ruble runaround
Before the U.S. imposed sanctions on the Moscow Exchange, Russia’s Central Bank set the official ruble exchange rate based on currency trading on the exchange. This rate could be tracked in real time on the exchange’s website.
Now that dollars are no longer traded on the exchange, the Central Bank is determining the rate of the U.S. currency against the ruble based on bank reports and information from over-the-counter trades as of 3:30 p.m. Moscow time on the current business day. (This rate is then published at 4:00 p.m. Moscow time.)
There’s nothing unusual about this method of determining the exchange rate, noted Alexandra Prokopenko, a non-resident scholar at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center and co-host of Meduza’s Russian-language podcast View of the Kremlin:
In general, exchange-based currency trading is fairly rare in the modern world. Most currency transactions take place on the interbank over-the-counter market, where participants report to the regulator. The regulator then determines the exchange rate based on these reports. Now, the same thing will happen in Russia.
The absence of trading in dollars and euros on the exchange has also created another problem: investors and ordinary citizens lack a reference point throughout the day. The Central Bank sets the official rate once a day, but with the current level of volatility, actual values can change significantly.
One way to estimate the ruble’s rate against foreign currencies is through the yuan, which is still traded on the Moscow Exchange. Using the yuan-to-ruble exchange rate, the ruble’s value against other currencies can be calculated using data from foreign central banks. Generally, the stronger the ruble is against the yuan, the stronger it will be against other currencies.
According to the Central Bank, the Chinese currency accounted for 54 percent of trading on the Moscow Exchange in May, making it the “primary currency in exchange trading.” “The yuan/ruble exchange rate will set the trajectory for other currency pairs and serve as a benchmark for market participants,” the bank said.
Non-deliverable forward contracts for dollars and euros are also still traded on MOEX and can also serve as indicators of the ruble’s value against Western currencies. Additionally, dollar futures contracts can be used to track the ruble’s exchange rate, although their prices have always differed slightly from the actual dollar-to-ruble exchange rate, Natalia Pyryeva, an analyst at the Moscow-based investment company Tsifra Broker, told Forbes. Contracts with earlier settlement dates provide a more accurate picture, explained Vladimir Bragin, head of research at Alfa Capital, as those with later dates are less liquid and may not accurately reflect current market conditions.
Although it’s possible to track the ruble’s current value through futures contracts and the yuan exchange rate, there’s no guarantee that Russians will actually be able to buy currency at these rates. The final price is now set by the seller and the platform where the transaction occurs.
Previously, the Moscow Exchange guaranteed that buying and selling dollars and euros was transparent and safe. Now, sellers can essentially set their own prices. As a result, the cost of exchanging currency — the spread between buying and selling rates — has increased, and these rates must be constantly checked. Additionally, the currency might not even be available at a given location. In the first few days following the new U.S. sanctions, many bank branches visited by journalists didn’t have any physical dollars or euros.
